    The Problem - Free Radicals

    Health authorities today warn us of the damage caused to our bodies by free radicals. What are free radicals? How are they created? How do they damage our bodies? It's important to ask these questions. Hopefully, the answers will lead you to improve your health and protect your future well-being.

    Free radicals are potentially toxic chemical units created in our bodies during exercise and the functioning of our organs. Stress and pollution increase the amount of free radicals in our systems and diminish the ability of our immune system to react to their physical threat.

    Free radicals have at least one unpaired electron, making them highly reactive. They can cause oxidative damage to tissue, attacking our bodies at a cellular level. As free radicals build up in our bodies, they lead to degenerative diseases and to an increased rate of aging.

    Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, giving up electrons to make the 'radical' compound stable. Antioxidants include Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene and the bioflavonoids.

    Road Sign 1 - Everyone needs added enzymes! Enzymes, called the "life force," break food down and deliver its benefits to the body. However, only raw food contains functional, active enzymes. Since heat destroys enzymes, food that is cooked or heat processed is essentially dead - and robs you of life!

    Without enzymes, foods overtax the body and may even cause the body to react as though its been poisoned. This physical stress can lead to premature aging, food allergies, and increased vulnerability to disease. The U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs concluded in its 1978 report that the average American diet is responsible for the development of chronic degenerative diseases such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, and diabetes.

    Nutritional studies show that a regular diet of cooked, canned or prepackaged foods depletes the body of enzymes needed to keep every biological process functioning at its peak. Therefore, unless you are eating an entire diet of raw, organic foods, you need to restore your enzyme supply.

    The only way to protect your health is to add back enzymes every time you eat cooked, enzyme deficient food!

    Road Sign 2 - Your bacteria need a boost! All bacteria are NOT harmful. In fact, without healthy bacteria, digestion is impaired, toxins increase, the immune system is weakened - and, as a result, infections and colds run rampant and disease may go
    unchecked.

    Ironically, a common medical treatment for infections has contributed to our risk! Some medical practitioners routinely prescribe antibiotics ("against life"). In addition, of the 40 millions pounds of antibiotics produced last year, half - 20 million pounds - were fed to animals. When you eat meat or dairy products, you consume antibiotics. Antibiotics kill harmful bacteria, but they also kill our probiotic ("for life") bacteria which we need for improved digestion and enhanced resistance to infection.

    There are other threats, as well. Helpful bacteria may be destroyed by stress, birth control pills, carbonation, laxatives and aging. To fortify your system and your digestive functioning, and to ward off toxins and bacterial infections, restoring healthy bacteria is a must!

    Road Sign 3 - Whole food vitamins are vital! Today's farming practices and preparation methods leave foods devoid of nutrients. Too frequently, we eat irregularly and consume too many foods - like white flour and sugar - that are full of empty calories and actually pull vitamins and minerals from the body.

    We live in one of the most affluent societies in the world, yet a recent study by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics revealed startling conclusions. Between one-third and one-half of all Americans are obese, even though many of these same individuals are malnourished. We eat plenty of food, but fail to get the nutrition we need!

    According to the American Medical Association, every individual needs to supplement vitamins. Nutrient deficiencies in our diets can cause fatigue, dry skin, colds, brittle hair and nails - and can eventually lead to deadly diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer, arthritis and diabetes. The good news is that with daily replenishment of vitamins from whole food sources, disease can often be prevented and health restored.

    Road Sign 4 - Minerals are a must! Like vitamins, minerals are hard to come by in our present-day environment. Lack of sleep, stress, prescription drugs, depleted soil conditions, and over-processed foods all contribute to our body's mineral depletion. Supplemental minerals are absolutely essential for health. However, research shows that minerals which are bound (chelated) to amino acids are the safest, most effective supplements, since they're more readily absorbed and used by the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules created by poor diet, stress, pesticides, pollution, electronic devices and, even naturally, by the normal biological processes of the body. The proliferation of free radicals has been linked to over 80 health conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, arthritis, cataracts, joint pain, bruising and age spots.
